I guess I see the logic behind it a bit? Cuz I do think the redness from being hit is just a sign of increase blood circulation. And also the fact that he starts soft then goes harder makes the apparent pain less obvious than if he just went hard straight away, like acclimatising to it.

There's a similar slapping treatment for face(jaw), arms, chest in Thailand and Indonesia. Tightens your skin from what I recall but is temporary

I've been to several Chinese salons that use slap therapy on hands during a mani and feet during a pedi. It's quite relaxing. Not sure about getting my head slapped 😅
