In the Gretzky era a team’s average goals per game was 3.5. In the Ovechkin era it’s 2.8. Gretzky has 894 goals through 1487 games. Ovi has 658 through 1081. Gretzky averages .6012 goals per game. Ovi averages .6087 goals per game. Therefore, Ovi is the best goal scorer ever because he scored at a higher rate than Gretzky during an era where teams scored on average .7 goals less per game.

Here's a stat: Prior to that game Ovi had played in 1080 NHL games. In the first 540 he scored 328 goals and in the second 540 he scored 328 goals. He has scored as many goals in the second half of his career as he did in the first half.
