I just posted this as an answer to Tesseract's question:-
Black ants and termites will co-exist, termites are used as 'cattle' for black ants particularly in winter when food for the ant colony is scarce, and the soldiers from the termite colony, around 5% of the total number are the 'enforcers' who will take on the Ants for defence. Termites are sometimes called 'white ants' but they are a completely different species. The only way to tell the difference between termites is to compare the soldiers - in Australia we have around 400 different species of termites, but only 3 are a problem for structures, in Far North Queensland they are extremely veracious and can in a very short time cause significant damage to a structure. They have 2 breeding flights a year typically Around October and March, also either just before or just after a thunder storm, when the humidity is over 95% and 30o Celsius. They swarm in their millions from hives.

Do black ants eat them or is that just a myth?
