Termites in your house - Warning signs and damage

Knowing the signs of termites present in your house can prevent extensive damage before it occurs. I will show you a few signs to look for to detect if there is termite activity, the damage they can cause and some interesting / scary facts. First sign is mud trails also know as mud tubes along you brick work entering the property. Damage to your wood work, paint and walls that almost resembles water damage is also another indicator that you have termites eating your house and is often mistaken for simple water damage. One termite colony can eat 6.5 kg of wood a week. The queen can produce 15-25 eggs a minute which equates to over 40,000 eggs a day. Termites are insomniacs which means they never sleep and are always working away at your house bite by bite. This is also a major problem across SE Asia. They had already eaten 4 teak door frames even before we moved in to our brand new house. Same with neighbour's houses. All fixed now with pesticide and less attractive metal frames. The big nest was removed last year from an adjacent piece of land, it went down and across for many metres underground. Kind of unbelievable how large their city and army was. Cheers Bill, hope your new home is termite-free.

Great video Bill. Copto termites are the most aggressive I've been told from an expert. We had them in the garden so got them treated and installed a barrier system around the house. Just get annual checks from an expert now and all is good.

They used to treat the footings of the houses with Chlordane and that used to largely prevent this stuff. But it's been banned for a long time now as it causes cancer. My grandfather explained to me once that when they were kids they had a dirt floor in their house. They were poor, but not so poor they couldn't afford a floor, but because the termites would eat it faster than they could put it down.

My sister in law had same problem. They had their lounge room ceiling fall down. That's how they found out about termites 😢.

Im sure in Australia the terminates can eat 6 kilos a week but in America subterranean termite colony of 60, 000 workers can eat about 1/5 of an ounce of wood in one day. To calculate the weekly consumption, just multiply this daily amount by 7

My place looked even worse than this. The extent of the damage was devastating. . The bathroom @ the laundry was completely destroyed. They even got under the carpet in the bedroom. Cast half a years salary to fix it. 😢

I live on a bush block and my yard is full of termites. It is a constant job keeping an eye on the house, making sure there is no trails in and ensuring there is nothing to give them easy access.
