If you untick the box "Auto update" in Item properties --> Legend items, you can easily control via the plus/minus-icons, which layers should be shown in your legend (without deleting layer names).

I'm new to usnig QGIS, I've used ArcMap before and in that program you're able to make the Legend into a Graphic and then ungroup the items inside. This is something I did a lot to really customize the legends on my maps. But I can't seem to figure out how to do that in QGIS, if you're even able to. There are layers in the map that I was shown, but not on the legend, i.e. State and County boundaries. I can't seem to be rid of the symbol of the State and County Boundaries on the Legend. If anyone might know a solution to this, I would be greatly obliged.

At first, I thought that was a picture of you. I was going to send a screenshot to my friends and say, "this guy looks like John Legend"...I almost made a fool of myself.

I want to add a legend, but I have over 40 shapefiles with different classification.
Is it possible to add a legend still?

You skipped the most important step.... This creates a separate legend window but does not actually add it into the map. How do you add it to the map? I tried save and also export and nothing happens (i.e. there is still no legend just to original map).
