Basic Thermostat Wiring Diagram Explained

Basic thermostat wiring diagram explained. In this video I go over the basic wiring schematic of a home thermostat for furnace or air conditioner applications. I also take apart a digital thermostat to compare the basic diagram to what it actually looks like inside. It definitely does not look like what you would expect after looking at the ladder diagram but it still works essentially the same way except that now the circuit board in the thermostat is responsible for doing the jobs of the temperature switches with the help of a thermistor which measures the room temperature.

"Basic?" You underestimate the value of this my friend! This is as clear and understandable an explanation of something as I have ever seen. I think you could teach any subject to just about anyone. You're a natural teacher. This was very helpful. Thank you.

As for someone who struggles to understand electronics, Jay I don't think you could've explained that any simpler than you just stated my friend!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge 👍👍

I have an assignment on this and I had no idea how to start or draw the diagram. I am like 10 sec on the video and you already gave me an idea on how it works. Thank you dude

Thank you so much.
My thermostat fried do to static electric charge. Only 4 wires on old stat to furnace so I am going to rewire it with 5 wire as new stat requires common wire. Your order vidéo showed Exactly how to rewire. I didn't want to worry about frying the board of stat.
Again thank you.

Jay I don't know if you remember me but I got my residential technician certificate today in the mail. Thank you for the motivation!

Great info. So helpful! Working to build a switch for a greenhouse to power up an outlet based on temp. Exactly the info I needed. 👍

Good work bud as always. Always good to know how the thermostat works since a lot of technicians don't pay attention to it.

Excellent job! The best explanation I have seen. Unfortunately, I'm getting 12.9vac from red to white, and 12.9 from red to common. Will have to check the transformer output next. Afraid it might be pooched!

Love the breakdown of the internal of the heat, off, cool switch. However, two things to clarify: 1. On the ladder diagram use only one bi-metal and position the switch from R in-between the W and the Y contacts. Show the bi-metal symbol on TOP of the switch. The interpretation is still the same R closes to W on a drop in temp. (Heat), and R closes to Y on a rise in temp. (Cool). 2. Draw the Fan switch pivoting on the G terminal and vertically touching Y for the auto setting, and toggling down to R for the ON setting. This indicates that the fan goes to high indoor fan relay coil on a call for cooling - R to Y and simultaneously to G. R to G just fan on high.
The heat anticipator and cooling anticipator found in mechanical stats are an added complication. Fortunately the people who still use them aren't troubled by it.

I am Korean
I always enjoy your lectures.
All are good lectures.
I am curious that when R and W are open, 24 volts are output, but when they are closed, 0 volts are output.
Since English is a problem, I will ask you a question using Google Translator.
thank you

Very nice presentation of some of the basics. What I'm looking for is what type of component is used to perform the connection of the 24V to either W, Y or G. Is it a relay or a solid state component? It must have quite low control current demand (high impedance input) since the two AA cells in my thermostat last a very long time. I'm going to use a standard thermostat as a hand-held device along with a wireless transmitter so I can move the thermostat to anywhere in the room. The receiver will be at the location of the existing thermostat wiring (which is in the wrong place to adequately control room temperature). So the receiver needs to switch the 24VAC and it must be battery powered as there is no house power nearby.
