EVERY tennis player can relate to this moment: you're playing an incredible point, your opponent is backed into a corner and coughs up a high, floating sitter. Time slows down and all of the thoughts start creeping in: "This is going to be awesome." "I can't possibly miss this!" "What if I MISS?" and then without fail, that easy ball goes straight into the net and you're left to wonder what the heck happened. Here's the reason you keep blowing those easy shots (and how you can put them away instead)....

in my experience, there are often coming two problems together on short balls, one technical and one mental problem. the technical problem: not focusing perfectly on the ball anymore, looking instead to place on the court where i want to play to. this occurs (imo) due to a mental problem, which consists in the hectic thoughts in that moment. so i made it a rule for me in those situations that my first impulse is to really keep on focusing on the ball, because that mindset keeps you in the present and away from thoughts.

It's implicit in this, but I'm reading the Inner Game of Tennis now, and it's very aligned. Removing judgment is so hard to do, but so key. Judgment will always be my initial reaction, but if I breathe past that that and instead reflect objectively, like you recommend, I always feel better. Giving in to the judgment is like eating ice cream, it's so darn tempting and feels natural, but I've still found it possible to reflect more precisely instead after a miss like this.

So, Ian, what were you thinking about before you missed that volley? Honest question.

Positive thoughts, "I am about to beat Steve!", can be just as harmful as negative thoughts. It is true.
Keep your mind clear. Strictly focus on *the now* and the present task at hand. "Volley cross court 2 feet inside the sideline."
Do not allow emotions to creep into your mind.
Be robot-like. Not easy to do but that is the goal. Lendl, Borg and Sampras are good examples of robot-like execution.

To me, all those 6 have in common... thinking ahead instead of staying in the moment like Nadal does.

"Steve" seems to be a formidable opponent...

I think another mistake is not fear, but overconfidence. I would play doubles, and my partner would see a ball that looked easy, and yell "kill it". Indeed, they thought it it looks easy, it must be easy, so I should put the ball away. Then, a player overhits the ball when they had been in control up to then.
