Cars of the Future: A Radical Rethink | FD Engineering

An engineering revolution is underway. Driven by dedicated individuals who are building extraordinary machines that will change our lives.

The world of Electric Vehicles, and the infrastructure needed for them, along with the radical change we must make to the way we think about transport, is looked at from the perspective of the developers.

As an investor in Arrival, this was painful to watch. If this video was just released in Aug. 2024, how was it not mentioned that Arrival has gone bankrupt? It was their production concept that sold me on them. I still think it's the future of manufacturing.

Well done, and exciting to see how creative minds can make for a greener future.

32:26 Oh dear god. Induction coil roadways? Did people learn nothing from the solar roadway debacle? Roads are NOT good places to put wiring, electronics, anything other than cement or asphalt. When they break (they will break) when they need maintenance (they will need maintenance) You have to shut the entire road down and get a jack hammer just to get to it. Not to mention the cost of building any length of road, with coils in it. The most expensive road in the world that would be. And why? Just to say you're induction charging? Pantograph systems are proven technology that is easy to service and repair, low cost, and FAST. Easily half the ideas in this documentary are pipe dreams that are going to fail. I'm all for thinking outside the box, but this kind of quackary is one of the reasons people distrust science and technology. People get promises that are impossible to deliver.

Aptera is the car of the future. It reduces the need for chargers and the vast majority of the components are recyclable. They use graphite composites. It is unfortunate that Arrival failed. Sometimes an idea is just a little too soon. I hope their technology is restarted in 10 or 20 years. The world may be much more open to the idea then. Aptera first started 18 years ago and restarted 3 or 4 years ago.

I paused the video when they showed Electreon. While I'm for EVs, cars, I would prefer a revamped public transit system for the reason that electric cars wouldn't reduce trafic jams. Governments such as the Province of Québec in Canada wants people to buy electric cars. However, the infrastructure such as chargers is not going fast enough. Québec's government is thinking of canceling subsidies while in 2023 there were 250.000 + electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Public/shopping mall parkings need to be upgraded with chargers. So, I'm going for more revamped public transit electric/hybrid, of course..

I've been following the Aptera development for several years. According to information I've seen published in various places, the Aprtera has a range of 400 miles, can do zero to 60 mph in four seconds, and has a top speed of 101 mph. In my view, none of these levels are necessary to have a truly practical and marketable vehicle. I believe that if they had a vehicle with a range of 250-300 miles, 0-60 time of 7-8 seconds, and top speed of 80-90 mph, they would be able to create a vehicle with a more "normal" appearance profile and use case, and would have a better product.

My issue is inductive charging does create inductive drag. I think it is much more appropriate for stationary vehicles. I am curious as to the efficiency for moving and stationary charging.

The idea of all vehicles being smart, monitored, tracked & controlled by centalized systems, private or public, means the end of revolt & escape.

Regarding the claim that an Aptera can charge up to 4 times faster than other EVs at the same public charging. I believe what the founder was saying in a simplistic fashion is that because an Aptera, due to it’s light weight, small size & aerodynamic efficiency, has a battery about 1/4 the size of other EVs. Thus it can finish charging in 1/4 of the time necessary for larger batteries.

`We are getting closer and its so very interesting, but I would have thought, that it would depend on which human you put behind the wheel.

ALSO THE ROADS THEMSELVES CAN BE POWER GENERATORS, BY HAVING THE VIBRATION FROM VEHICLES PRODUCE THE VERY POWER THATS POWERING THE BATTERIES. SORT OF LIKE A SELF SUPPORTING POSITIVE FEEDBACK LOOP

America was the country to popularise the pickup truck and suv. These vehicles are expensive and inefficient. These large vehicles burn lots of oil. They cost a lot to maintain and run. But make big profits for the auto industry and oil companies. They are unsuitable for large, congested city where space is limited.

Why does this reminds me of concord vs wukong
One is all about diversity, efficiency and and lot of talk while the other on is just a good game. The same goes with cars west talking and researching much while the Chinese are making comfortable, affordable EVs that get the job done

I'm all for Aptera, big fan of Aptera.
However few details are incorrect. The charging speed will actually be much slower than most electric cars, but it will have smaller battery so it will take about the same time to charge Aptera compared to other el cars. Aptera will not have motors in the wheels like originally proposed but will have regular el motor connected to the wheels.

Born 1960 thete was supposed to be cars flying all over the city by the year 2000, nevermind 2024, nowadays its suv city, many gray, silver or black or white, its like monochromatic. Bo-ring !
