A Secret Blend Mode for Compositing in Photoshop

What is Pass Through Blend Mode? Learn how the difference between "Pass Through" and "Normal" blend modes can be a great compositing tool in Photoshop. This is a very important lesson and most people have difficulty explaining it with the behavior of the merged layer. And it's simple - when it's "pass through" - the tuning passes through the group, when it's "normal" - stays in the group. Respect Unmesh!

Took me a while to grasp this, but got there in the end, i can see this would be useful if you feel the need to apply an effect inside of a group, after it has been created. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

I use this technique quite often. The only problem I found with it is this if you have layers in the group with drop shadows, for instance. Their Blending Modes work in Pass Through. Change the Group's Blending Mode to Normal, and the individual drop shadows no longer work. They're there, just without a blend mode. I usually convert my drop shadow layers to Smart Objects, then, can change the Group's Mode to Normal.
