----------------------------------------------------

Part 1 :-

-------------------------------------------------------

A DNS server is a computer server that contains a database of public IP addresses and their associated hostnames, and in most cases, serves to resolve, or translate, those common names to IP addresses as requested.

DNS servers run special software and communicate with each other using special protocols.

Primarily designed to locate and deliver websites to end users over the Internet or a private network, a DNS server is developed on typical hardware but runs specialized DNS software. It is always connected to the Internet or a network.

A DNS server stores a database of different domain names, network names, Internet hosts, DNS records and other related data. The most basic function of a DNS server is to translate a domain name into its respective IP address. During a domain name resolution query, DNS records are searched, and if found, the domain name record is returned. If the domain name is not registered or added to that DNS server, the query is then passed to other DNS servers until the domain name record is found.

DNS server software comes in dozens, if not hundreds of flavors. The best known version is BIND, which is free and distributed with Linux/Unix systems. On Microsoft systems, the Microsoft DNS is bundled as part of many Windows Server releases
Definition - What does DNS Server mean?

A DNS server is a type of name server that manages, maintains and processes Internet domain names and their associated records. In other words, a DNS server is the primary component that implements the DNS (Domain Name System) protocol and provisions domain name resolution services to Web hosts and clients on an IP-based network.

Do the tutorials show how setup a local or public unbuntu DNS Server? Wasn't sure if the IP address used in your example (172.25.1.11) was local or public IP. Suspect the IP was on a local network and the tutorial explained how to setup a local DNS Server running on a local network webserver. That is the website in the tutorial 'example.com' only works from within the local network. I am a novice who has setup a 'public' accessible ubuntu webserver running nginx. I have a godaddy.com DNS name which routes all public traffic to my public IP. My modem routes (port forwards) all public traffic to a local IP running an ubuntu webserver 'nginx' which worked great for "http://" but struggling trying to figure out how to setup "https:/" with SSL using a verified DNS name. I saw your DNS tutorial and thought maybe setting up and hosting my own DNS server, might help me set up a public facing 'https://' website using "Let's Encrypt" and CertBot. Basically trying to learn how to host my own "https://" public facing website from my own ubuntu computer webserver. Would greatly appreciate any comment to better understand the required process. Thank you.

Bro could you please advise in RHCE exam I failed to configure server and client to get their resolution via the given domain name server. So i was unable to download utility, keys and other stuff. I have to do entry into /etc/hosts or /etc/resolv.conf. in the exam I have given the ip and FQDN for dns but for utility server I have given only FQDN name. So how to resolve this.

another easy solution:
- edit /etc/resolv.conf to the desired dns
- run the following command: sudo chattr +i /etc/resolve.conf
- it works! you can check by restarting either your computer or the network service
