I'm not Korean but my family holds the same superstition with wallets and purses. If there's nothing in it when it's gifted it'll lead you to ending up broke 😅

Same here in Poland! Also it's looked down upon to give someone spiky/sharp things (from literally cacti trough knifes to actual guns) because that's indicating that you wish hurt to them

Thanks for the cultural info!
Now the fancy silver shoes gifted to a couple of girls in Boys Over Flowers make a lot more symbolic sense!!

In Appalachian culture you don't gift scissors as it is seen as cutting ties with the person.

I used to study Mandarin, and there’s a similar superstition in China that if you give someone an umbrella it means you’re saying goodbye forever. This is because the words for umbrella (yǔsǎn) and break up (sàn) sound very similar. Thought this was interesting and wondered if it applied in Korea as well, since the shoe thing is a Chinese superstition too 🤔

That’s very interesting! 😁 In Serbia it’s a custom to give newlyweds household items, but never knives because that means that there’ll be fighting in the home. Also, you never gift an even amount of flowers, you only bring those to the cemetery, even amount of flowers is for the dead so it’s a bad omen to give to living people. There is also the belief that it’s bad luck to gift baby items while the women is pregnant, or at least not give them until she is close to the due date. I’m pretty sure there are more, I just can’t think of them right now. 😅

I love hearing these kinds of little tidbits, I like the idea of being able to secretly be petty w certain people in my life while looking like I'm being generous with a gift lol
