Flushed Away - Nostalgia Critic

It cut ties between Dreamworks and Aardman Studios, but Nostalgia Critic thinks there's more to it than people give credit. Let's take a look at Flushed Away.

Flushed Away is a 2006 animated adventure comedy film directed by Sam Fell and David Bowers (in their feature directorial debuts), produced by Cecil Kramer, David Sproxton, and Peter Lord, and written by Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan and Will Davies. It was the third and final DreamWorks Animation film co-produced with Aardman Features following Chicken Run (2000) and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and was the first Aardman project mostly made in CGI animation as opposed to starting with their usual stop-motion – this was because using water on plasticine models could damage them, and it was complex to render the effect in another way. The film stars the voices of Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Shane Richie, Bill Nighy, Andy Serkis and Jean Reno.

One of my favorite jokes is when Rita says that her father broke every bone in his body trying to find the ruby, and when he finally see him, he's literally wearing a full-body cast because of all the broken bones.

You gotta praise a movie set around sewers and toilets that has the decency to have only TWO poop jokes! (The “chocolate buttons and the candy bar in the sewer) THAT TAKES SOME SERIOUS RESTRAINT 😂

I appreciated that they didn't include a "Liar Revealed" plot. They were supposed to, with Roddy lying to Rita about promising her a Ruby if she took him up. Thankfully, they recognised it as clichéd.

My favourite Whitey moment-

Rita- "Alright, alright- check the tin"
Spike opens tin and is immediately knocked up and back by a spring snake
Whitey (completely deadpan)- "Was it in there?"

Another reason this movie was CG was because Aardman Studios had a fire which broke out after the Wallace & Gromet movie came out and destroyed all their clay assets, so while they literally had to rebuild the studio, they had to use other forms of animation for the time being

I can't believe that I didn't realise that Kate Winslet voiced Rita until recently. She really did a marvellous job, and I hope that she does more voice work.

My sister and I quoted that short interaction so many times as kids, and we honestly still do. This was one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid, though admittedly it was one of the only movies we had on dvd, but even still, it was a great ride and I'm glad you enjoyed it as well.

This movie probably has the best nutshot joke that I've ever seen in an animated film. It's a shame that it bombed...

Another Fun Fact: Once Roddy enters the sewer version of London, a female mouse shouts "Feed the flies, tuppence a bag!" This is a reference to Mary Poppins, set in London, where it's "feed the birds, tuppence a bag!"
