The jet age arrived at Braniff International Airways on this day, Monday, June 15, 1959, when the luxurious seven-mile-a-minute Lockheed L-188 Electra four-engine turboprop airliner began service between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio and New York and Chicago. Braniff inaugural festivities were held at each location to welcome the Jet Power Electra to the Braniff system.

Braniff's new 400 mile per hour Electra Flight (Braniff dubbed the new aircraft as Electra Flight) aircraft could fly between Dallas and Chicago Midway Airport in a short 2 hours and 25 minutes and Dallas to New York Idlewild Airport in a remarkable 3 hours and 55 minutes. Dallas to San Antonio and Dallas to Houston was flown by Electra in only 55 minutes. The initial routing for the first Electra flights was San Antonio to New York with an intermediate stop at Dallas Love Field and Houston to Chicago also with a stop at Love Field.
