The Levant Mine Disaster

In 1820, the Levant Mine project in Cornwall set out on an audacious mission: to dig a mile beneath the Atlantic Ocean in search of vast copper and tin deposits. But this ambitious project didn’t come without its challenges—and tragedies.

By 1857, a revolutionary man engine was installed to transport miners through the mine’s dangerous depths. However, after 62 years of relentless use, the machine gave way in a catastrophic collapse, sending miners plummeting into darkness. Rescuers fought tirelessly, but 31 lives were lost, and the mine’s dark legacy was sealed as it eventually flooded.

Over its 110 years of operation, the Levant Mine extracted billions of dollars’ worth of copper and tin, but its secrets are far from fully uncovered. Today, what remains buried deep within the flooded shafts is left untouched, waiting for the next daring soul to take on its challenge.

There is a cemetery next to the Clown Motel in Nevada that is mostly men who died in mining accidents. There is a little story on each gravesite.
