Why pay any more? (Ssangyong Musso 2024 Review)

The current-generation Ssangyong Musso has been on sale since 2018 and retains a small but strong following here in Australia due to its bang for buck.

Costing less than $50,000 driveaway for the very top model, the Musso is far cheaper than the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, and competes primarily with the likes of the GWM Ute Cannon and the LDV T60 Max.

A 2.2L turbo-diesel sits under the bonnet producing 133kW/420Nm which is fed to the wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system.

The Musso tested here is the long-wheelbase version that also features a coil-sprung rear end when most rivals make sure of a leaf-sprung setup, yet retains a 3.5-tonne towing capacity.

I purchased my Musso in May. A great drive. Like that it is Korean made & not Chinese. Seems really well built & for a cheap ute, smooth to drive. What a price for all the fantastic features and benefits with the Lux pack. When i was buying had a test drive of the LDV then the Musso straight after. It was like chalk & cheese. Starting to see more on the road. If your looking to buy a cheap ute thats not cheap!! This is the one. Love it.

I bought an ultimate swb with luxury pack for only $41k back in May, a hell of a car for that price, with almost every thing that you could ask for. Love it!

These cars are seriously undervalued! Top quality inside, love it! Even better with our custom body mounts too!

I have one! Awesome, no comparison with Chinese utes. Tows my 2 tonne boat and van with ease. I would recommend suspension upgrade and airbags, both fitted by dealer. Also fitted a throttle controller, makes a big difference particularly on take off. One year of ownership and am loving it.

Needed to touch on that the base model EXL in the XLV with leaf rear springs has over 1000 kg payload and a GVM of 3200 kg and a GCM of 6700 kg 👍

I have a family old Musso 1997/1998 YoM, this thing has been a daily driver for all those years, and still works well today, also love the 2024 one, guess will get one soon..

Try under $40K in rural areas when it is ex-demo. They are an absolute bargain for what you get and are not Chinese.

My 2023 elx LWB has been a pleasure to drive. 27K so far. If Ssangyong stay in business, I would buy another. Will see how longer term reliability goes.

My old Musso sport 2005 modal had 4 wheel disc brakes, new utes now a day still run drum rear.

Had a base model since 2020. Put on a 2 inch lift, AT's and a bunch of other stuff. Have taken it into remote communities camping and working in some pretty crazy terrain. It's kept up with all the other big forbies and in a lot of cases out-performed them. Can't count the amount of cars I've pulled out of bogs. Haven't had any issues yet other than a handbrake issue to do with the dealers over tightening it.

First service for mine was over $600. The capped price servicing is basically to cover labor only. Atleast thats what the stealer... I mean dealer told me. Was annoying to find out afterwards.

In Korea, SsangYong refers to this model as the Rexton Pickup. In other words, in Korea, the successor to the Musso is the Rexton, and this vehicle is the pickup version of the Rexton. If you visit Korea and want to purchase this vehicle, you should buy a Rexton Pickup rather than a Musso. In Korea, the Musso was sold from 1993 to 2005, and it is the predecessor of the Rexton.

The lap seatbelt in the back must be legal in Australia or that ute would not be able to be registered.

What a lot of reviews miss on the Musso is 2 very important design characteristics. 1. Wading depth is 350mm which is the lowest of all utes. 2. Centre bearing/driveline bearing is housed within the cross member, this means you cannot install a diff drop/trans drop if you install a lift which most owners would do as standard the Musso has very low clearance.

Did they fixed the big problems with handbrake from previous utes?

just got sent this, great utes my only small complaints would be the steering wheel is so small and uncomfortable on journeys over a hour, and the center controls dont face the driver anymore by a few degrees they are flat and not as user freindly thats all ive found in 175k

Main criticism coming from blokes who reckon it's looks wouldn't match their handbags.😂

I think I would look at this instead of the underwhelming engine in the Tasman
