Recording Sound to Camera vs Audio Recorder - Rode VideoMic NTG

Is there any difference between recording audio straight into the camera vs using a professional audio recorder? In this video I test out the difference using the Sony a6600 first and then comparing the audio quality with the Zoom H6.

The best preamps are on the H6, so here is another way to hook up your mic that you can try. Plug the mic into the H6. Plug the line out from the bottom of the H6 to the mic input of the camera. Turn the gain of the camera to 1. Turn the gain of the mic down on the mic, and turn the gain of the H6 up. What you are doing is just using the H6 as a pass through for the mic, by just using the preamps. If you play with the gains, you can record on both at the same time and have a backup track, one on the H6, and one on the camera.

Good Video ... none of my cameras can accept an external mic, so I use 2 different types of Tascam recorders. I'm so used to recording separate sound now, I don't know how I would act with a mic jack on the camera... glad to see this comparison. Cheers

Try lowering the camera from a 4 to a 1 and increase the gain on the mic. You might notice less background noise. Not saying you have any. Just that the test might produce a difference you actually hear so it's worth a try.

Incredible camera quality and the only video that covered this specifically. Most people just assume you are either recording on the portable recorder or just directly on the camera/phone like there isn't middleground. This video deserves more views, you deserve more subs.

Thanks for the video. I have a question. What cable should I use. I currently have a trrs cable that came with the microphone (also videomic ntg ) which would be too short if I want to connect it to an audio recorder. But if I'm correct, this mic accepts both trrs and trs cable so does it matter which one I will buy?
