About Over The Garden Wall:
On an adventure, brothers Wirt and Greg get lost in the Unknown, a strange forest adrift in time. A wise old woodsman and bluebird Beatrice help them find their way. Along the way, Wirt's thoughts envelope him, while the wonder of the surroundings preoccupy Greg. The miniseries -- based on creator Patrick McHale's cartoon short "Tome of the Unknown" -- features animation that evokes a nostalgic storybook feeling, inspired by folk art and classic illustrations. The voices include Elijah Wood and Christopher Lloyd with Samuel Ramey, Chris Isaak and John Cleese among guests.

I cannot be the only one who can't help but act along as if I'm the one telling the story every time I hear the song

I love how the Tavernkeeper is giving some of the best advice that Wirt will hear in the Unknown: Be wise, and *DON’T BELIEVE HIS LIES!*

With the echo of her voice and the moaning chorus, it sounds like the twins stumbled upon an abandoned cemetery. A mass of weary spirits arise from their resting places to greet them. Wirt, obviously, is frightened, but Greg takes to them like a fish to water. They ask about the Beast, a horrid creature of branches and darkness. The spirits sing them a woeful and cautionary song, desperately trying to ward the young ones away from peril, to avoid the fate they saw so many others suffer.

This is their last rite, to protect and warn. To guard and to defend. For that is their self-appointed eternal purpose...

Or you know, spooky skeleghosts or something, I dunno. :)

I find it very unsettling the context that follows this song. They say the Beast was originally in possession of the lantern. It seems these trees slowly drip the oil that the beast needs to survive.

That alone should be enough to sustain him, right? Yes. But it's not enough. The beast realized the oil could be refined into a much purer, concentrated substance. So he must have willingly given up the lantern to the woodsman, tricking him into making this refined oil in great quantities.

Basically, this soul oil became an addictive drug to the Beast.
