About Over The Garden Wall:
On an adventure, brothers Wirt and Greg get lost in the Unknown, a strange forest adrift in time. A wise old woodsman and bluebird Beatrice help them find their way. Along the way, Wirt's thoughts envelope him, while the wonder of the surroundings preoccupy Greg. The miniseries -- based on creator Patrick McHale's cartoon short "Tome of the Unknown" -- features animation that evokes a nostalgic storybook feeling, inspired by folk art and classic illustrations. The voices include Elijah Wood and Christopher Lloyd with Samuel Ramey, Chris Isaak and John Cleese among guests.

We need more Cartoon Network miniseries.

OTGW was short, but I feel like if we had any more of it, the charm of the show would be gone. Thanks for making my autumn seasons so much better, Patrick McHale

I don't know of many songs that are considered 'autumn classics', but this is definitely a solid contender.

I wonder how many songs exist that are titled "Into the Unknown?"

Lyrics:
Led through the mist
By the milk-light of moon
All that was lost is revealed
Our long bygone burdens
Mere echoes of the spring
But where have we come?
And where shall we end?
İf dreams can't come true
Then why not pretend
How the gentle wind
Beckons through the leaves
As autumn colors fall
Dancing in a swirl
Of golden memories
The lovelies lies of all

This song has probably my favorite lyrical twist ever. The whole entire song is relatively comfortable and upbeat in its tone, never really swaying in one direction or another to allude to a separate tone, but then a single word in the last lyric changes the tone of the song from warm to sinister almost immediately. "The loveliest...lies...of all" Just that ONE word, "lies, " shifts the whole tone, which is heavily aided by the emphasis the singer put on it. Its so simple yet so effective, one of my favorites ever.

Underated songs and soundtracks like this, only makes me fear the amount of masterpieces like this that i may never hear in my entire life, sad.

This song somehow puts me to sleep or makes me sleepy, and honestly, I'm not sure why. Never thought songs could put me to sleep, lullabies did nothing.
But this song just really is calm and puts me in mind of sitting outside during the autumn days. Dark clouds rolling in that aren't ominous, but comforting as they cover the sky in bleak grays with soft wind and the smell of rain.

Each line of the song foreshadows a specific episode, in chronological order.

"Led through the mist"
The first episode starts with them lost in the woods, walking through the mist.
"By the milk light of moon"
In the second episode, the light of the moon marks the night, which js the time the skeletons rise from the graves.
"All that is lost is revealed"
In the third episode, the fiancé that was lost is revealed to be inside a costume.
"Our long bygone burdens"
In the fourth episode, the bygone burdens are the people who were lost to the forest and remembered by the people in the tavern.
"Mere echoes of the spring"
In the fifth episode, the echoes are the inhabitants in the giant mansion, both living together but unaware of each other, lost inside their own houses.
"But where have we come?"
In the sixth episode, they finally arrive at Adelaide and discover that they didn't come to the place they were led to believed they would.
"And where shall we end?"
In the seventh episode, they are without a guide and without a plan to get home, and uncertain about their destiny as the beast lurks in the woods.
"If dreams can't come true"
In the eighth episode, Greg decides during his dream to sacrifice himself for Wirt, and his wish does come true.
"Then why not pretend?"
In the nineth episode, we discover that the kids are actually from the present time and got lost after a Halloween night.
"How the gentle wind / Beckons through the leaves / As autumn colors fall
Dancing in a swirl / Of golden memories / The loveliest lies of all"
The last lines are all about the last episode. The "gentle wind" is actually a strong wind that brings Beatrice to Wirt. It is gentle not because it's weak, but because it brings them together. The leaves are Greg's, because he was turned into a tree. The autumn color falling is not just his leaves, but his life leaving him as he becomes pale. The beast offers to keep his soul inside the lantern. The golden memories of Greg's life are contained in the dancing flame. However, Wirt understands that the Beast is lying, and the flame is the Beast's own soul. That's why it's the loveliest lie; because it frees the souls of those who were captured by the Beast.

Of course, the song can also be interpreted with a much more melancholic tone, as the lyrics are both direct references to the plot and elements of a song with its own meaning. Instead of portraying an optimistic end, the song talks about how, faced with the impossibility of accepting death, we maintain the memory of life as a lie.

This is not new, as it is quite straightforward, but the fact nobody talked about it was bugging me so I decided to comment on it, thanks for listening to my TEDTalk.

Otgw just gave me a whole new way to see the world, I live by the woods, and it always gives me unknown vibes during the fall. I have a greg costume and I love walking through the woods in it. Thank you Otgw, for making our falls something else.

I think that the most important thing when telling a Story is to set the tone before everything else, when you manage to do that you're set to be a success.
Over The Garden Wall is the perfect example of that, the soundtrack, ambient, sound effects, way the story is presented to us, etc... Everything works together in this show.
