More than 30 years ago there used to be a small tv show in Eurosports called Surfing Magazine that I used to record on VHS tapes. It was usually all bout Curren, Occy, Potz, etc. Once they made a special clip called “Almost Academic” where they talked about this kid named Kelly that was winning all the junior stuff. I was 14 at the time and Kelly was 17 I think. First time I heard about him. Now I am almost 49 when he retires. Thank you Kelly, what an inspiration and an honor to watch you surf all this years.

From myself being a Grom, growing up watching, idolizing Kelly, to now being a 40 year old man, still glued to every event he’s in!… First Billabong pro in J bay I watched live I think in 96, was Kelly destroying it, to every year there after at either J bay watching live or on the screen around the world… he was the main attraction! Still is!… but what now? Its just gonna feel different without him!😢

Great tribute! The amazing thing at 52 is in addition to being the GOAT Kelly is now an encouragement to older folks to stay fit and stoked on life. So stoked I got to be in the water with him while bodysurfing pipe, it ‘twas a surrreal moment.

I've never said that Kelly Slater is "too" anything. It has been an absolute pleasure watching each of his 11 World Title wins over his 33-year career. Kelly is the GOAT across all sporting codes and has donr more for surfing at large than any of his peers. Itll be sad to see you go, Kelly ❤

So close to it being more than 11 titles. In the past few years so many heats he lost were just by a whisker. Shame we didn’t get to see 12 but what a phenomenal career. And that was with a mini retirement after his 6th title!
