Approximately 2,000 babies are born each year with Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), a condition where a child has an abnormally large hole between the chambers of the heart after birth. This video shows the most common type of ASD and the different ways and ASD might be repaired.

My ASD was noticed by doctors in 1982 when I was 29. It was very large, the size of a half dollar coin.after surgery, no meds needed. When I reached 66, I had aortic stenosis, and needed aortic valve replacement, and tricuspid valve repair. Now 70, with a fib, and going strong.Thank you my wonderful doctors❤️❤️

Great video! I had my surgery 2 weeks ago. I am on my 40's. I am feeling good so far. I am starting feeling some difference, incredible more energy to do things and not get tired.

Hey all
M proud to be an ASD,
Was in negativity since past few years
But when I went out
And did all those things that some lazy people can't.
I understood it's just the hole in our physical body part
Not in our thinking.
We all Heart ❤️ patients
Are Caring and loving
Keep smiling
Have a good day 😊😊

Got 2 holes covered by patches in the year 2000 and now 19 years later I have to do it again. So much science and technology and these issues keep coming back

I had the catherization procedure done about almost a year ago. The first thing they do is shave your pubes before the procedure: You will be asleep and procedure is like 4-5 hours. The worst thing is upon waking up your throat will be so sore you won’t be able to talk and it’s painful. After the procedure I took baby aspirin for 6 months to prevent blood clot.

Now I can work out without breathing like I just ran a marathon. Science has come a long way!

This is wonderful to see. Remember that there are different types of ASD: ostium secondum defects in the majority of cases (70%), where it is in the middle portion of the atriumand 3cm in diameter; a sinus venosus defect just below where the superior vena cava enters the right atrium, this has low atrial rhythms on the ECG; and the ostium primum defect, where the defect is in the lower part of the septum and clefts can affect either the mitral or tricuspid valves.

I was born with an ASD (which was discovered when I was 3 months old) and I had the cardiac catheterization procedure when I was 10 years old (my [new] doctor noticed my heart was enlarging). This was back in the '80s. Yeah. I was only the second person to have this procedure as it was new and still being perfected. I have had no problems since.

I had a operation for ASD, It was really easy, and no pain, if you will be getting operated there’s no worries, I did this operation at 15 btw!

I was born with asd, my mom never told my how big it was or whatever the heck it was located, but i had it filled in when i was 2.
my mom told me i had to take pills and stuff when i was 2 until i was about 3 years old. if i didnt take the pills, i would be a 10 year old with an iq of a 2 year old. i would also be short af-
my mom never told me if i had any other . but i was born with a twisted tounge or whatever you call it, a hole in my heart and something that didnt let me grow.
i used to cry alot about how i was like- the only one in my family to have health issues, i still don't understand why i am the only one but yeah-
i have absolute 0 knowledge in medical stuff so i always search things up.
Currently- i only have a skin thingy that gets triggered when i eat somthing with milk but i'm doing great overall
thanks for the video! it helped me understand asd better

Was born 2 months premature, no symptoms for 37 years but got ASD discovered after a routine echo test was recommended after my late father passed away from an unrelated open heart surgery complication 4 months earlier. Had a 22mm hole and had catheter surgery. Back home within a day and sensitive groin area for a few days. Had to be careful not to bleed through the wounds. Will know in a few months if my dialated heart will recover its normal size eventually.

I was born with a hole in my heart, it may sound very serious but it's not. It is a really small hole which heals on its own. But when I tell my freinds that I were born with a hole in my heart, they never believe me. 😑

I had a minimally invasive surgery to treat my ASD in 2022 because the hole was too big, had inadequate rim and and the defect overtime had caused tricuspid regurgitation which also needed to be fixed. The surgery left one 4cm long scar on my right groin, three short scars around my chest (one 3cm scar and two 1cm long scars).
