An atrial septal defect or ASD is a birth defect where there is an abnormal connection between the two aria of the heart. This condition is sometimes known as "hole in the heart".

For the last two years I have been dealing with major episodes of syncope, shortness of breathing, palpitations, tachycardia, and high blood pressure. On the 24th of June I had one such incident that nearly got me intubated and sent to the ICU. After a echocardiogram it was found that I had a ASD. They have said this is what has caused my issues and I am being referred to a cardiothorasic surgeon for surgery. I’m hoping we can do one of the closure devices and I can avoid open heart. I’m 31 and this was just found because prior I had no issues with it. My PCP said it has likely been there since birth but sometimes these can happen if someone has a prolonged fever that goes untreated, chronic strep throat, or heart attacks can also cause these.

I'm 50 years old now. I just found out that I have ASD. That's why sometimes even when I'm sleeping, my heart still palpitates or that's why even if I'm just sitting down, it suddenly palpitates. I was born with this but it wasn’t detected until I had a stroke at age 45. A blood clot went through the hole to my brain. I did have it patched and closed to prevent it from happening again. I have to take blood thinners the rest of my life.
