Huawei has been rather heavily hit by the US chip bans. In a rather ironic twist, their latest flagship phone is incapable of even connecting to their own 5G networks due to the chip shortage.

Four years ago, I was looking for a new smartphone.
My mobile provider offered me a vast range of Huawei phones.
I told them I didn't want anything that dealt with Huawei.
"But why? They are cheap and high-quality!"
When I told them about China and its policies, they looked at me as if I was some conspiracy madman.

I used to use the Honor line of Huawei phones. They were pretty damn good. Then, when I learned more about what this company was about, I dropped Huawei.

It's funny because I used to do customer service for one of the biggest telecommunication companies in my country, and most of the software we would use was created by Huawei. The most notable one had almost all the information of every phone number that was registered. (e.g. complete usage history of a phone number or personal info like the address and name of the client)

The spookiest possibility is back doors in military communication system. Being able to either seize communications or tap in and be able to listen.
It was done strategically because it’s usually in mission critical devices but not in devices that would be typical. Such as, not in a device with a microphone but inside the satellite dish. Instead of something in the camera it’ll be in the server that the cameras route into.
So it’s usually not something typical of spying but it’s hidden in equipment that would accompany the devices.
Like moon touched on with the pricing, a lot of these devices were sold as a loss to ensure their product would make it into the project they are infiltrated.
Lucky we caught this now, and have time to disassemble their bugs.
