Gambino Family Boss - John Gotti's Funeral Footage (2002)

In 1998, John Gotti was diagnosed with throat cancer and sent to the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, for surgery. Though the tumor was removed, the cancer was discovered to have returned two years later and Gotti was transferred back to Springfield, where he spent the rest of his life.

Gotti's condition rapidly declined and he died on June 10, 2002, at the age of 61. The Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn announced that Gotti's family would not be permitted to have a Requiem Mass, but allowed a memorial Mass after the burial.

Gotti's funeral was held in a non-church facility. After the funeral, an estimated 300 onlookers followed the procession, which passed Gotti's Bergin Hunt and Fish Club, to the gravesite. Gotti's body was interred in a crypt next to his son, Frank. Gotti's brother, Peter, was unable to attend because of his incarceration.

In an apparent repudiation of Gotti's leadership and legacy, the other New York City families sent no representatives to the funeral. Numerous prosecutions triggered by Gotti's tactics left the Gambinos decimated. By the turn of the century, half of the family's made men were in prison.

Props to the lawyer for saying how it is… the biggest legacy of John Gotti is that he was John Gotti till the end..

I was 12 back in 1987 and would often walk on Mulberry St to and from school. I'd often say hello to a nice man I'd see in the same place on a regular basis. He called himself Mr. John. He'd ask me how my day was, tell me to stay in school and listen to my parents. It was years later when I'd seen him on the news I realized it was Mr. Gotti.

He never flipped on my family back then from what my grandma told us he took care of people when they needed it and kept people safe. He was straight up with everyone. Just don’t break the rules.

He was what he was, a gangster a street guy and he didn't care who knew it, and he was the real deal too, unlike a lot of guys who couldn't do the time and flipped.

Yes, you certainly got that one right Bruce, Gotti did affect a lot of people, probably left kids without a father, wifes without a husband, sisters without a brother.

I'm a mortician in a large city. We have had funerals for important people also. I remember we had a former Judge who was very popular. We had 3 flower cars and 8 limos. We had about 300pl going to the cemetery on a very hot summer day. Temp was well in the 90s with humidity adding to it. People were passing out right outside the cathedral.

Him being incapable of keeping his mouth shut, is what killed the old mob. Him talking about everything he had ever did every crime was on tape.

Our country and people are in sad shape.
When a man like this is propped up and honored, it's a sad, sad day.
This man killed, cheated, lied, stole, was a terrible husband and even worse father.
He never worked an honest day in his life, and this is the kind of crap people are gonna honor???

They illegally tapped that old lady’s apartment and in opinion poisoned John. Mad they couldn’t “get him”. Meanwhile look at the scums on this earth now…unreal. At least when the mob was in the neighborhoods, they kept the area safe, looked after.

The government was pissed he received this type of funeral. They tried to humiliate and demean him before he died
