mta subway is cheap compared to other city. how much nyc and nys subsidies for mta. bridge and tunnel is too expensive now.

Its NYC...prices go up. Usually the subway fare is the same as an average slice of pizza, which is now 3.25.

The subway fare is actually really cheap, even with the increase, because most other agencies have zoned fares for their metro/subway systems and some even have peak/off peak fare making it even more expensive. I can make a trip from the upper Bronx to lower Brooklyn for only $2.90 with unlimited subway transfers and a bus transfer, such a steal

The issue is that we have over 100, 000 customers or even way more that evade the fares daily. Why should we charge more if this issue hasn’t been addressed yet? Why should customers who pay daily be the ones punished? Take care of fare evasion first and then raise fares.

I mean, when Kolkata tried to hike the fares of their streetcar system by 1 paisa (the equivalent of a cent in INR) in the 1950s the public rioted and set fire to over 10 tramcars.

So yeah, NYC hasn't gone nearly as far as they could have lol

One of the top reasons they raise the fare is because of the rise of people not paying their fare and jumping the turn styles or going through the emergency gate. They are finding out how to remodel the turnstiles. The only way they could still run while not going bankrupt is raising the price.
