My grandparents lived on N 12th Street. Their family had a total of 3 kids. My gram died in 1918 during the flu epidemic and then he married again and had 5 more kids. They were Irish and German Catholics. The whole community it seemed had their own parish, st Michaels. It was a great place to live. I was there in 1960 and I remember the tall 3 storied brick building with marble steps. Gram would clean them every day. Can you imagine? I just wanted to share that with you.

Peabody-Darst-Webbe has high crime statistics because most of the residents are in densely-populated public housing. Neighborhoods farther north have so many vacant lots and abandoned houses that the population per acre is actually rather low, and that has an effect on the crime rate.

i was born and raised in north st.louis... my younger sister worked at crown candy when she was 14 years old... i moved in 1962 to los angeles calif when the crime was really starting ..
im now 82 years old and i would not walk down the street in my old neighborhood especially after dark... its a shame that this has happened...

I was born here in 1957 and I still live here and I'm here to tell you this city is always been bad even back in the 1960s when I was growing up. Terrible crime and brutality inflicted on innocent people.😢

STL has become a cesspool and isn't worth trying to visit at night anymore

I'll stay in the Peabody area. It's used to be nothing but hi-rise housing projects across from City hospital back in the 90s. Visit family at home in 2020 & my aunt & neice got a nice new apartment in the Peabody area. I think about signing up for them apartments when I move back

Amazing! My grandparents owned 1125 Dolman, we walked all over that area in the 60's and early 70's. I grew up in South St. Louis and Affton until I moved to Phoenix in 1982. What a difference 😥

I'm curious, the husband and I recently retired and are thinking about buying a second home in the county, what's the best community for appreciation (we are used to unbelievable appreciation here in Phoenix)? My research shows Baldwin or Chesterfield, an I correct?

It's not crazy to think about if you only travel through the area during daylight which is a catch 22 of course

In the 1960s I grew up at 23rd and Montgomery Street. Which was bad even back then. My vote for the worst would go to Walnut Park.

I used to live in Ballwin! Oak Tree Farms subdivision. I miss seeing brick homes, many of them are ranch style. Too many of the newer homes in my current city, Kansas City, MO and surrounding areas have little if any brick and many of them are split levels.

I actually lived where that Walgreens is now, across the street from old STL City Hospital, which was "abandoned" at the time. 1526 Lafayette to be exact. Ask me anything.

Walnut park and baden are also dangerous neighborhoods especially sence walnut park was the first places that started getting dangerous

The crime rate is skewed though because they always include the crime from county but not the population.

The Peabody area has almost always been the most dangerous area in St. Louis. I grew up in that neighborhood. Why are you surprised. You must not originally be from St. Louis or were sheltered as a child. I lived in the Clinton Peabody Projects. I grew up here.

It's a shame these old homes are wasted on people who don't give a damn about improving themselves or their community.
