How could this happen to such a popular piece 😭😭

And at such a terrible time too, right as the song gets quiet before the grand finale. Trying to bring back that emotion you’ve been building up to for the past 11 minutes after the audience cuts you off must be so hard.

It’s true. You must applaude when the pianist stands because it means the exhibition is finished. Music rests are not conclusion of the music

Edit: thanks for discussing my comment guys. About what you overall answered me I can say that, if people do a certain thing it is not said it is the right way. Applauds can kill vibes as someone mentioned in a comment. But at the same time, on an audience prospective, you really feel that a specific moment was the moment to congratulate the musician for an amazing execution moment, that simply doesn’t feel the same after the end of the whole execution.

My teacher once did that with the same piece, and he kept going. To be honest, it’s not super horrible, as people don’t know. What IS horrible is doing that after I played the introduction of the ballade no. 3. Like bro, it’s been 1 minutes in the ballade, and you guys are clapping!?!? 😂

2013, I played the 2 Chopin scherzo in a theatre and they clapped on the end of the central part. I was astonished

That happened to me in the middle of Chopin's Second Scherzo. I looked square at the audience and exclaimed something like "oh COME ON" to much laughter thank god, left the stage, and came back to restart the piece.

He should just get up and bow. He'd get home earlier.

COMPLETELY AGREE AND ONLY CONCERT PIANISTS may ever "get" this. Just as comedians hear a collective audience start laughing at what they believe is the end of the joke - meanwhile the punch line is still 4 or 5 sentences away. It's not done on purpose, but it is OFTEN done through simple ignorance.

The best way to control the audience is to sit on that cord for a moment and keep your hands on the keys. That way you telegraph you are not done.

i’ve always worried about this and it’s why i never rest for too long in a solo or something… but a lot of feeling is lost with the shorter rest so it’s really a lose/lose

If you see the video, the pianist pulls his hands entirely away from the piano in a big flourish. I understand the audience’s confusion, albeit I realize that they should’ve known better.

I played this in a recital. Had the same thing happen. I turned on the bench, faced the audience and said "but wait, there's more!"

My college choir director made people hold their applause until the entire concert was over. It felt weird at first, but after I got over that, I realized that it really tied the whole concert together like you were listening to an album or something.

I'm performing silvestrovs ballade no. 1 in about 1.5 months at a local church event and it has 2 full bars of silence and I can just feel it. I will be back to tell you what happens if I can remember

It's because he does not make it clear. He should keep his hands over the keyboard to indicate that it is not over. It's his fault.

A piece of advice : if you're not finished and there's a rest comimg up, keep your hands close to the piano! A bit of eyebrow lift is also useful
