The guy who found the phone tried to return it to apple. He called apple support and the employee thought he was joking and did not believe him. So after not being able to return it he sold it to gizmodo.

I think you forgot the most crucial part of the story.

Gizmodo threw that guy (the guy who sold the iphone to them) under the bus. They ratted him out and now he had pay legal fee for selling the iphone.

Hate to ruin your story but Gray Powell( the developer that lost the iPhone) was not fired and worked for Apple after this took place. Steve Jobs even joked about it at the keynote saying when it was being released “Stop me if you have seen this”

I remember when this happened. It was insane in the tech world. Keep in mind everyone, this was in 2010 when the iPhone was still relatively new and there were good improvements year after year. Blows my mind this happened. Even Jobs had to admit at the keynote people had seen the design before.
