Take your favorite studio compressor to the stage with the MXR M87 Bass Compressor.

A complete array of controls—Attack, Release, Ratio, Input, and Output—makes it easy to fine-tune your sound, from subtle peak limiting to hard squashed compression effects. Its CHT™ Constant Headroom Technology gives you plenty of headroom and clear performance.

This totally transparent compressor allows your full dynamic range to shine through until your signal reaches the compression threshold, which is indicated by the ten, highly visible gain-reduction status LEDs. It's all packed into a durable, lightweight aluminum-housing pedal that's the size of a Phase 90.

It's a compressor. It's designed to limit the higher volumes and boost the lower ones actively. You end up getting a more even volume response.

to add to your brief explanation ... bass compressors are mainly used to keep a constant signal coming from your bass into your amp and subsequently to the stage sound which means no matter now hard or soft you play the output stays the same (to an extent), it even gives a nice tone to certain bases. this here is one of the best stomp box bass compressors on the market

Brings your lows up and your highs down giving you an even volume through all your playing

Just bought one and added it to my bass rig. Unlike many compressor pedals this guy is incredibly transparent and that’s perhaps the biggest think for a guy like me that just has it at the end of my signal chain to do some light limiting. Worth every penny

I'm new to compressors so this video was great as it showed a clear comparison between the uncompressed sound and then the pedal in action. Also, the colour of that bass is pretty damn tasty… there's nothing more delicious than a butterscotch-coloured guitar!

thanks, this was helpful. i love this pedal for EVERYTHING except for slap, so checking out your settings for your (great) slap tone might help me out

Trust MXR to bring out a decent compressor.
Spent a long time waiting for a propper compressor pedal with real controls and a decent Gain Reduction read out.

Youtube bass video's all sound rather compressed to me, due to listening via a laptop and headphones. And maybe there was some compression done by google in the uploading process? So to really appreciate this pedal one should hear it in real life, with a real bass guitar and a real amp.

@oplah93 Bassist use compressor pedals to kind of "Beefen up" our bass tone, or get a "punchier" tone from compressor pedals. bassist also use it to balance out different playing styles. for example a bass player plays softly, then switches to a aggressive slap bass line with out distorting the P.A. speakers at a venue. more than likely he is using a compressor pedal. hope this helps. a compressor pedal is probably the most used pedal among bassist, yet it is a vary subtle effects pedal!
