📜 History of Dividing the Middle East: The Arab Revolt - The Allies thought that defeating the Ottoman Empire would be an extremely simple matter but it was, in fact, not simple (this will be a reoccurring theme for the allies). As they try to take Constantinople, the surf will turn red with the amount of blood spilled from the landing parties. Luckily, they're about to get a boost from the internal strife of the Ottoman Empire. So long as the British promise to help establish an Arab kingdom. A promise they definitely intend to keep. Right???

What's the old saying "The reason why the sun never sets on the British Empire is because God doesn't trust the British in the dark"?

This brings back memories from the Post World Wars history class in college. The amount if stupidity drawn into Middle-Easten maps is jaw dropping. Not mention all of the secrets treaties, double crossing and back stabbing that occurred around the world at the time. Amazing how a few selfish decisions made in the past can still carries weight today.

Minor point, but Sheikh Hussain actually had 4 sons. The fourth, Zeid, went on to serve as a diplomat to Abdullah when he became king of Transjordan.

My uncle once met a french archaeologist in Syria and whilst chatting in some ruins, the man told him that the English and French divided the area in a way that it could never ever unify. This would be very handy as it would keep local states weak.

Reviewing the history of the Arabian partition is like watching a movie you've seen so many times, where you like certain characters and you want them to win but know exactly how badly things will turn out for them.

After the war has been won, deception or treason?
Who can tell?
Who stood to gain?
Who stood to lose?
Who did the dying?
Betrayal of trust from within or compelled?
The pillars of wisdom can tell
Back home where a new life awaits, whispers of past
The sands of Arabia calling.

Let’s cut the cake, said Sykes and pico, carving up the remains of the not-so-ottoman-anymore-empire

Don't forget their was a third party on the Sykes-Picquot agreement: Russia. Through Sazonov Russia would ask the easternmost part of Anatolia around Trebiznd and Erzurum. They also asked for Tsargrad, a little city you might know as Constantinople
