There is no East or West pole. Why is the world stuck in these old ways? East and West can only be directions, whereas the north and south poles are places. The International dateline doesn't exist. That said Santa Clause is real! his address is 123 Elf Road, North Pole, Merry Christmas Everyone..

It's mainly just conventional wisdom. Start at NY, go east, you get to Europe; go east again you get to Japan. So if you start at NY and go east, you get to Japan. But that is not considered correct by convention. If you start in NY and fly west, you get to Japan. So Japan is both east and west of NY. Ask yourself this, however, is Afghanistan east or west of NY? If you ask someone this, you would get a blank stare.

No, not accurate. According to this video, Germany, Denmark, etc., would all be considered Eastern countries, but they're definitely Western. It has more to do with the Eurocentric view of the world, and the fact that when they travelled, they had to head east until they realized they wouldn't fall off the edge by heading west. "Western" simply refers to Western Europe and the countries that they colonized, such as Australia, the U.S., etc.

In reality, with the earth being round, there is no true east or west. From Vietnam, if one moves eastwards through the Pacific Ocean, America is east. For an American, moving westwards through the Pacific ocean, Japan is of the West. The funny thing is though Australia and New Zealand are located on east of the map with a very advanced time zone, they are considered part of the Western world.
