I feel like the question to ask as to whether games should cost this much isn’t “How much do games cost to make?”, and instead, “Who asked for them to cost that much to make?” I was more than happy with PS3-level graphics, so the bloated budget on graphics for new games just seems like a waste to me.

With all the great indie games that can give you a better (and usually more unique) experience for a cheaper price (even factoring in if they have DLC), yes AAA games are overpriced.

You forget one small fact - they are selling orders of magnitude more than in the cartridge/cd days. They can swallow up the inflation easily. AAA games today are very expensive.

Short answer, yes! For the 70-80$ pre-alphas we get handed over nowadays even 20$ would be to much for most titles. There is no such thing anymore like AAA games, at best it's B games or C games. Graphics aren't anything, yes if it looks good, people are more willing to forgive because it's an eyecatcher but still, core gameplay, feature completeness and extensive QA/Bug testing should be top-most priority for any game if it want's to classify itself as a "AAA" game. It's not about the eye-candy but the experience as a whole! I have nothing from a game if it is pretty to look at but when i take one step in the virtual world everything starts falling apart and glitching.

Plenty of games well before the early 2000s cost way more than $60
depending on game cartridge hardware you could be paying something like $70-$80 (Starfox SNES, SMW2: Yoshi's Island, etc)
at least back then you were actually buying more physical hardware.

P.S. No, I didn't grow up around then, I've just kind of absorbed stories and information about this from various sources over the years.

It's less about cost and more about what I'm paying for
Used to be you could literally buy a game day one and not have to worry too much about it breaking down.

Now adays if you buy a game day one its likely to damage your entire console or PC.

You can't even wait for the update cycle to finish because a few years after it comes out you'll get a remaster, next gen update or some other form of "actually complete edition"

I'm sorry, but I don't think you should have focused solely on "are games worth their price" topic and focused about the giant industry aspect more, if you are going to make a follow up to this, focusing on that aspect more I'll give it a watch, but games being worth their price for just how much effort goes into AAA games is a more nuanced subject that directly goes along with the topic of corporate structure within gaming industries of today, but like I said, it's a nice warm up to maybe a future video where you might dive deeper into the topic of prices in gaming

I say this thing..
Witcher 3+all dlcs 30euro when i got it and 1200Hours+ of game play This is extremly cheap...

A.C Mirage 30euro at discount and a few hours into it i had enough...Extremly expensive
AVATAR Frontiers of pandora(NO dlcs) 40euro at discount and 10-15Hours and just couldnt keep on playing it (REASON FOG and blurry game gave me a headache+didnt like it at all)
Another extremly expensive priced game.

Shorter way to put it would be 100euro for 1 game w 1000hours of gameplay in base game+all dlcs are cheap
100euro for a bad game w 10h is extremly expensive

So price of a great game is almost always worth it and the games i cant stand is expensive even at 10bucks no matter content that follows it

So make great games n keep on taking much cash for them! Is what i would like vs Bad games for high price is just killing the industry i think(atleast the last year 12months of games have mostly been horrible w a few good ones)

Thanks 4 video

Considering we paid $35 for single screen atari games in the 80s says we will pay whenever they ask

Yes. Yes you are. Pirate, wait for a sale, or play something better and cheaper. Only ever pay the asking price if A: It's genuinely that good, and B: if the price they're asking is not an obscene amount. (Anything over £40 should be a hard pass)

The increase of prices and decrease of game quality is why I've moved on to Indie games primarily. It sucks, but that's simply how it is, and I'm done hanging onto franchises that have no intention of getting any better, because they used to be great in the past. Looking at both of you, Warcraft and Halo. Neither of you have any excuse to justify the fact you both suck balls now.

No, (sarcasm) we owe it to devs who all the sudden have collectively declared that making games is just so much harder now. Like the Destiny 2 dev team when they started monetizing the game and tweaking the grind/drop rate to try to push players into spending money on micro transactions.

I cannot believe that you forgot to mention UNDERTALE, an internet phenomenon of a game with how much of an impact it had on several generations of gamers.

~90% of AAA games are overpriced (especially the new ones).
This is pure fact.
There are FREE games with awesome gameplay.
Indie games are superior. Easier to find a game that you'll actually enjoy playing.

Eh? Naw, i still spend the same ~$50/yr on games i have for the last 3 decades... if they don't want to offer things for sale for the price I'm okay with paying for gaming, just don't pay them..

'Labor Theory of Value' was always BS, it doesn't matter how much ya put into it, the value is the quality of the end product, not how long or how much money it took you to make it.
