I have a related problem. I have spent 6 months trying to find a shortcut as it is a cornerstone of some maths I need for an MP3 player on the ARM Cortex M0+ processor.

I need to multiply two 2-digit numbers together but I only need the thousands and hundreds. Now, my first insight is that the units column cannot overflow because in effect 0 is being added to it. Then I don't need the tens value, just the carry value.

FYI the M0+ CPU has a MULS instruction that multiplies together two 32 bit numbers but only returns the bottom 32 bits so I have to split the 32 bit values into 16 bit values so an overflow cannot happen.

I have looked at various multiply methods but this is something with no algorithm I can find.
