Dad owns a 340 that I’m able to fly and rack hours in, fits the whole family of 5 comfortably. I’ve logged about 200 hours pic in that plane probably the best bang for buck when it comes to maintenance and fuel burn.

The fuel system is pretty much the same on a 310 and a 421. 2 tip/main tanks, 2 aux tanks in the wing. Fly on the tip tanks for about 45 min to make room for the return fuel from the aux tanks. If you need to use the single locker tank, transfer to the left main/tip tank and crossfeed. If you have two locker tanks then just transfer to the mains and feed off of them. . Not complicated, but not simple like a warrior or a 172 either.

Your fuel numbers are about right. I too have a 340 A. By the numbers, your friend has a ram engine, likely a VI or VII. That additional 25HP is really nice to have when you are climbing out or doing a go around or a missed, The engine management you mentioned is more for a geared engine on a 321 than a direct drive like a 340.

Once you go airstairs/aisle and pressurized in a twin you can't go back.

A friend of mine used to own a 421. Years ago, I sat in the co-pilot seat for a night flight. I looked out at the right engine and realized it was glowing. Completely freaking out on the inside but trying to remain calm, I looked out at the left engine, which was also glowing. I then calmly mentioned the glowing to my friend, who said, "That's normal. It's just the turbo-charger". I was calmer knowing he was calm but still uncomfortable with the idea of a massive glowing chunk of metal like a nightlight on each wing.
Also, I realize the hot section of turbines is no different, but being unable to see it gives me a certain amount of ignorant bliss.

I own a 340A and am actually going to sell it. While it is a fast plane, a P210 Vitatoe conversion goes almost the same speed, with the same usefull load, a much more reliable IO-550 with a 2200 TBO, and 17gph fuel versus 38 gph fuel. Dont get me wrong, its fast and awesome, but when you can do it single, its the way to go.
