The New Kind of LASER You Should Know About!

Excuse me for saying "dichromic" a few times when I mean "dichroic", whoops! And I should have been more clear that only up to 50% of the light comes out on the crystal axis, the rest comes out in other directions.

I'm mostly interested in programming topics, but I think Dave could explain how paint drys and it would still be fascinating. Glad to hear you're recovering from your back surgery.

"It's eating all the white light it can get and then pooping out little photons of red light" ... is arguably the best description of all time of laser physics. I am going to use that with my child. I am sure it will increase interest in physics :) Thank you Dave.

Your explanation of the coherent emission in a single direction left out some important aspects. "LASER" stand for: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. In the case of the ruby laser, existing photons of red light stimulate the emission of more photons of the same energy. Also important are the mirrors at the ends, which bounce the light back and forth along the ruby rod. I don't know whether the crystal lattice structure is significant at all, but it is certainly less significant than the amplification and the mirrors.

Dave, I just need to say this was the most amazing LASER safety segue I have ever heard. Great basic cover on the "you can't protect yourself, so don't try, and don't point to what you don't want to destroy" part. Safety first! Great video as always, only 1/2-way through :)

So glad to see you looking as spry as you do, for only being a week post-op. Happy that the procedure went well. I was so jacked up on Morphine after I had my procedure, I couldn’t see straight for 3 weeks. Best wishes for a continued speedy recovery.

My 20 year old son is on the spectrum as well. Watching your videos, and your thought process, gives me hope that my son will one day be able to live a rich and full life. It's frustrating seeing all his ability and talent take a back seat to his social challenges and difficulties.

I really wish I'd have had you as a teacher or professor back in school. I love the way you explain topics.❤

4:12 I'm happy to hear you explain how that there really was no net gain in energy from that Fusion reaction. So many others are parroting the facts in such a way as to be misleading to the point of essentially being a lie.

Yo gotta love the way Dave explains stuff. He manages to encapsulate complex ideas in everyday language. That is a rare skill.

Well done. This is an area I knew nothing about. Thanks for taking the time to author, record, edit, and publish. Welcome back. I'm glad you are on the mend.

My lord, that was the best, clearest explanation i've heard in 50 years; and I used to work with this stuff. wow.

This was the best video I have ever seen on lasers. I am not a laser guy, but I love to know everything mechanical and electrical. You pack so much information about lasers I have been curious about for my entire life.

Great explanation! Thank you!. Reminded me of my younger day when a bunch of us engineers opened a Helon Neon laser scanner up to "see" how it worked...very bad idea. we all felt like sand was tossed in our eyes... we were so lucky...
