Date Calculator: Find the Birth Date from Age and Death Date

Показать описание
Learn how to calculate a birthdate of a person from their tombstone or death certificate when it only shows the person's age and death date.

Many of the older tombstones from the 1800’s and prior often showed the person’s date of death and something like “Aged 54 Years, 5 Months, and 20 Days.” How do you calculate the date of birth when you have leap years every four years? In this episode, I have a simple solution.

Time and Date is my go to for helping figure death/burial dates from obits when publication date is a specific Tuesday In October 1843 and states “died last Saturday “ and “burial is Wednesday “. You can pull up the full year calendar which is nifty. I didn’t realize how helpful the calculator would be for this as well. I was doing it by hand. Thanks!

Hey, thanks Connie! I have many ancestors who lived and died in Vermont. A lot of the death cards only give the date of death along with the number of years, months, and days lived. This will be a great tool for me to determine the birth date. Love it!

This is a very helpful tip. I have had to try and figure this out on my own. Now I'm going to check how accurate I was. Thanks!

The gravestone maker in 1867 didn’t have access to timeanddate.com. Perhaps discuss the techniques likely used at the time to make this calculation, including the assumption that all months have 30 days.

To note, in many instances, timeanddate.com will give two possible dates: one subtracting the smaller units (days) before the larger units (months/years) and another subtracting the larger units (months/years) first. It also knows all the convoluted rules about leap years. In contrast, the person chiseling the gravestone likely did not consider any of this.

Therefore, one should properly denote whenever a birthdate has been calculated because it’s just an approximation.

I find the usage tips found at this calculator to be good guidance:

For further details about the arithmetic plus a calculator that simultaneously shows results from all three approaches, reference:
