Why can there be a fire burning inside a tree?. In addition to human factors, fires inside trees can also be caused by lightning strikes. The fire that ignites inside can burn for days and is difficult to extinguish. Once the fire inside the tree ignites, the inside of the tree trunk will quickly turn into charcoal and burn really hot. The quickest way to deal with it is by cutting it down, and problem solved.

Early 1980's. Driving in a torrential downpour. Lightening hit a tree on the roadside in front of us. It exploded in a blue orange flash. We decided to head back home. We drove past it a little ways and turned around.

On the way back, the tree was engulfed in open flames. Despite the fact that it was still a torrential downpour. I mean it was raining so much that it wasn't even like drops. It was more like truckloads of water being dumped.

The point is, that's how hot the fire was from the lightening strike.

And it wasn't the top of the tree. It was more like in the middle of it.

One of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed from nature.

Late 90's. My rural home had a 4 foot diameter old tree stump in the front yard. A tree we cut down when I was a kid.

I decided to burn it out, and made a camp fire pit out of it from the hole it left.

2 weeks after I burned the stump out, on a rainy drizzling day without any wind, I looked outside and saw smoke rising up from the ground in various places in the front yard.

What the fuck?

The roots had caught on fire and were burning underground in a radius of a out 20 to 25 feet from the main stump.

Water soaking into the ground must have created steam. It was kind of erie.
