This stunning video shows a tree that had been struck by lightning burning from the inside out.

Glenn Ratcliff, 44, filmed the awe-inspiring spectacle as a huge flame roared inside the hollow trunk of a tree that had been split in two halves during a thunderstorm in Trinity, Texas, on October 17.

Glenn, who is a small business owner, uploaded the unique video on social media where it quickly went viral, reaching over one million views.

Glenn said: “We had no wind that day and fortunately no trees around it caught fire.

Did this man just use a riding lawnmower to catch a dynamic shot of the tree?

This is a fairly common event in bush fires in Australia, we call it chimney'ing but don't get to close as the tree will fail over at sometime.

That's a catalpa tree. It had heart rot, that's why it caught on fire internally. If it had been sound, it most likely would not have caught fire. The punky heart wood is burning because of lots of oxygen -- which would not be available inside the wood if it had been a sound tree.
The flame coming out of the open knot shows that there is essentially a chimney effect feeding oxygen to the fire.

A sound tree struck by lightning usually gets a strip of bark blown off, and the wood is not lit on fire at all. That's because before it can burn, the moisture would have to boil off -- and the wood blowing off is because of steam suddenly being produced in the outer rind of sapwood.

People posting about "DEW weapons" have to give it a rest. I guess the question is why do they go there at all? Oh, never mind.
