We share 22 clues on how to identify a real GT Mustang. After watching this video you'll have a pretty good understanding on what makes a real GT Mustang and how to tell a real GT from a fake or a clone! We used an original 1966 Silver Frost GT Mustang fastback as our example for this video.

There are:

7 external clues:
* GT gas cap
* GT trumpet exhaust
* GT stripes
* MUSTANG lettering
* GT Badge
* Disc brakes
* GT fog light bar

6 under hood clues:
* fog light wiring holes
* 13/16 diameter front sway bar
* 289 V8 with four barrel carburetor
* A code in Vin# at 5th digit
* large master cylinder with clip on top (for disc brakes)
* quick ratio steering box (with HCC AW tag code for power steering or HCC AX tag code for manual steering)

4 interior clues:
* GT exhaust hanger bolt mount with reinforcement plate under rear seat
* Fog light switch
* disc brake pedal pad
* GT gauge cluster (*for 1965) (*could also be pony interior option without GT in 1965)

4 undercarriage clues:
* Dual exhaust
* GT dual exhaust hanger bracket mounts on rear floor pan
* GT reinforcements in rear frame rails (*same as trunk clue)
* brake line mount location left of exhaust bracket

1 trunk clue:
* GT “U shaped” reinforcements in rear frame rails (this one is our favorite ways to quickly find out if a Mustang is a real GT because it's easily accessible and also happens to be one of the hardest to fake)

We hope this video is helpful!

Sets the standard for well informed, professionally presented videos. I wish more YouTube people would do the same.

I'm glad to see someone provide complete information about early GT cars. Most of the time it is only half the clues or wrong. Very well done.

Our neighbor Bob Bogardus was one of Ford's So Cal guys. Gave my brother and me Mustang tie tacks for Christmas in '65. Thanks Bob!

Thank you. I bought a factory 65 GT Convertible and can't wait to check it out with all the info you provided. Great job!!!

A very well done presentation. Those mufflers were amazing . . no way they'd look like that if it was a northern states car after 50 years.

Well, there you go. I have a rebuilt 65 A Code Fastback that I've pulled apart and reassembled more times over the years than I care to remember - and I had always wondered at the stamped hole through the radiator mount plate. I had assumed it was for the horn in some way. Now I know.

Good job on this video. I researched 5 years ago before I purchased my 65 Fastback and discovered it is a true factory GT. The best way is how you explained the factory exhaust reinforcement in the rear frame. Actually I was hoping I could prove it was not a GT to get the price down!

very good vid, I owned two originals, one of the most durable cars ever, Mine went over 150 k on everything and never too slowly. in fact more the other way. Second one was a gutted theft recovery i updated a bit and kept from 77 till 2003. front spoiler the biggest improvement to handling and cooling, kills the front end lift and pulls air out of the engine compartment.

A great informative video, a dream for me in the sixties. Best wishes from a Mustang lover from Norway.

Very nice video and thank you. You stated that only GT's would have had a cut out rear valance for dual exhaust tips (at around 13:13). How about cars that received the dual exhaust option from the factory but were not factory GT's? I have a '65 with exactly that case. FYI, it also has the mounting hangers underneath.

Keep up the good work guys.

Had one, 1965 Guardsman Blue, A code 4 spd. I put a pony interior in it. Last I knew it was in the Netherlands - was watching a body off restoration when their web site went down. Would love to see it now!

The father who is for 80 years old this year is at the time when I was still young. I took part in a fastback of 1965th model year. I'd like to take it now, too, but it isn't easily and is quite expensive car by a book today. A cool car.

A friend of the family asked me to help them sell their old car. 65 GT convertible. This video will help me determine if it’s authentic. The old fella (owner) has Alzheimer’s, but says it was repainted in his restoration shop Caspian blue several years ago, and engine has 1 hour break-in only. Add roller tip rockers. All new OE interior including new roof.
Now to verify using this video. And help them sell it.
