Singapore Airlines has been hit pretty hard by the Covid-19 crisis — retrenchments, financial losses, and more. Our national carrier is... kind of in deep sh*t. 😟

But we cannot let it die. Here's why.

Yeah what a company? Loyal share holders who actually financed the carrier now do not get the promised dividends, but the CEO still gets his salary. Will the Govt bail-out give the shareholders anything?

Privatizing Profits, Socializing Losses.

Don't see SQ giving Singaporeans better rates when flying.

No need to explain this guys, the govt told us very clearly by prioritizing them with every single policy and grant related to COVID-19 relief. Maybe you CAN explain why the govt shouldnt abandon certain sectors or straight up see them as non-essential.

That doesnt explain why the useless board and ceo salary must be paid with taxpayers money. They should be placed on minimum pay like the pilots. Save the airlime but not pump taxpayer money and let the elites continue to get paid. The late lky will never to this.

Spending Billions to save a struggling airlines for namesake's -- first world problems. A leaner, airline can always take its place providing competitive work environment with a new business structure that's created to survive covid19. One imagines that that same funding that could go on to fund meals or roofs for hundreds of thousands of heads.

There're a few Chinese sayings that I really like:
各人自扫门前雪,莫管他人瓦上霜
皮之不存,毛将焉附?
唇亡齿寒

As Mr. Trump always believed: global warming is a myth, and it has nothing to do with US.
Nobody can be sure of what the future holds, and therefore we should be kind to one another, and take care of each other.
We may never know how loosing SIA will impact the country, or ourselves.
Thus, we should not jump into conclusion that the government's decision is not viable.

How much of the SIA bailout is going into the CEO's pocket?

ANA is not Japan's "flag carrier" - JAL is.

Meanwhile in Malaysia: "The Malaysian Government WILL NOT support Malaysia Airlines in years to come". Government has additional debts because of COVID-19 and the opposition is struggling to take the office even though they were meant to be in office anymore. Plus the next year's Malaysian General Election 2021 that will decide who are Malaysian's true choice to take the office. You know what let's just move forward towards 2021. 🇲🇾❤️🇸🇬

NOL was the same 20 years ago, it was the Singapore's national shipping company. Everyone believed that having a national shipping company is key to cementing our Maritime status. But did it matter? NOL was losing huge sums of money in 2005 and was delisted soon after. Temasek lost quite a bit of money trying to keep it alive and more than 10 years later, Singapore is still the most busy port in the world with bunkering activities only increasing over the years.

SIA is NOL in the making. Rather than cutting loss and let it go today, we are spending 10b to bail it out and eventually sell it to another national carrier 5 years later. Singapore will still retain it's key spot in the global aviation game regardless.

We have no advantage in owning an airline which is a capital intensive game. We have expensive labor and more importantly, we have no domestic market to cushion SIA from external shocks, be it COVID or war or anything that can cause a de-globalisation environment. We need to compete in our strength, that is making use of our key maritime location and transparency and ease of doing business, which SIA is not the real beneficiary of these traits.

I'm seeing a noticeable similarity with Singapore and China where state capitalism are employed, thus SIA being a sovereign brand of Singapore, gov would be keeping the state owned companies afloat/intervention in need of time like now. Correct me if I'm wrong

Definition of National Carrier is to make money for a select group of executives? paid by taxpayers who have very little in return and no say on the anointment of those select executives. Amazing.

SIA Essential? To the investors yes. Not to Singaporeans. It's merely another airline option that not every local could afford. So I'd say Not really needed. At most, SIA would be privatised at some point if COVID19 drags on - which I would reasonably assume, is the case since no vaccine has been found and the virus is going wild in some big countries.

Why has Singapore Airlines been charging higher fares for Singaporeans in Singapore and lower fares out of Singapore? We always ended up taking Turkish, Emirates and Qatar Airways due to lower fares and better services.
They didn't need us during their glory days why now?
Their staff always served ang mo's a notch higher then us modest Asians..
After what their ceo withdrew his bonus of 4.5M and retrenched over 2000 people due to the pandemic Singapore Airlines should be ashamed for being called the national carrier.

BS..one doesn't need SIA to fly to/from overseas to SG. When everything is well, we don't see SIA giving Singaporean citizen better offer/rate/promotion but when things get bad want citizen's money to help..
