Saying Goodbye to the Babies🥲#rescue #opossum #viewandchew

At 3am on September 15th after waking up for some early stretching, I saw something still on the busy road near our home. Fearing our elderly cat snuck away or our new neighbours cat escaped and tested the waters, I took a deep breath and went out to investigate.
Upon closer inspection it was immediately NOT a cat but a BIG Opossum. A big female opossum, with babies nursing in her pouch which had opened due to impact. They were tiny and squirmy and didn't look injured. I grabbed a glove and removed mom from the road and carefully but forcibly removed each baby I saw (which I later learned was wrong) tucked it in my sweater and headed home. I put the 4 little babies in a super warm and furry hat and my mothering kicked in. I held the hat to my heart and slowed my breathing. I went to a quiet place and sat with them. I couldn't imagine what they had just been through, how close they came to death or how long they had been there! How was it that they survived all that and someone was up AND came to check them.
