It was used before, in the Spanish civil war at least, but this name was so colourful it stuck. The idea came from that 'bread basket' - a 'drink to be served with it'.

Molotov's were empty booze bottles, witch were filled with fuel, spri, alcohol and tart. They did not have rags on top of them, but matches taped on side.

There was no rag usually, just 2 weather proof matches taped on the side of the bottle

I remember reading about the Molotov Cocktail and the Russo-Finnish Winter War. The Finns inflicted horrendous casualties on the Soviets, but were eventually overwhelmed.

It was used for first time in Spain during the civil war.

That's not the real origin, they were actually created in Spain, it was the name that was put in Finland.

For your information, an Azerbaijani chemist Yusif Mammadaliyev has created it.
