Why is it called Mercedes?

Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius tells why the company is called Mercedes.

The name "Mercedes" comes from a young girl named Mercedes Jellinek, the daughter of Emil Jellinek, a wealthy businessman and automobile enthusiast. In the early 1900s, Jellinek was heavily involved with the German car company Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), which was producing cars under the Daimler name.

Emil Jellinek was passionate about cars and even raced them, and he ordered a series of vehicles from DMG with custom specifications. He insisted that these cars be marketed under the name "Mercedes," after his daughter, as he believed it would give them a more elegant, exotic, and feminine image that would appeal to wealthy buyers.

The "Mercedes" name became so popular and synonymous with high-performance, luxury vehicles that DMG officially adopted it as their brand name in 1902. Later, the company would merge with Benz & Cie, forming what we now know as Mercedes-Benz.

My Dad would often tell this story. He always wished to own a MB but could never afford one. I recall him taking me to the Cattle Fair in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, in 1957, where su6to makers from around the world brought their new 1958 models. He revealed his long love for MB cars and told me the last car he would own was a MB.
As you might imagine Cuba went through political, social, and economic upheavals barely 2 years after that and we emigrated to the US in 1960. It was finally in 2005 that my wife and I took delivery of a MB as it rolled off the factory in Stuttgart and shipped it home. By then Dad was ill and too old to drive, but it was indeed the last car he ever rode in before passing in 2007. He just loved riding around with us, to him he was being chauffeured.

The Mercedes Maybach is made in small batches a year and has a huge waiting list. They start at half a million. The tires literally lean in when you turn at high speeds. Insane engineering.

Mercedes-Benz was originally a part of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) that was founded in Stuttgart, Germany. The Mercedes-Benz headquarters and its main production facilities are still in Stuttgart today. The first Mercedes-Benz vehicles were created by Karl Benz. In 1901, he created the Benz Patent Motorwagen and that was the first gasoline car. It was then introduced to the public under Daimler Motors Corporation. In 1902, an Austrian automobile entrepreneur, Emil Jellinek, trademarked the name “Mercedes” after his daughter, Mercedes Jellinek. Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler later combined their companies in 1926, and thus began the production of the first brand-name Mercedes-Benz models.

The Spanish word "merced" means "grace" or "mercy." "Mercedes" is originally a name for Mary and is derived from "María de las Mercedes, " which means "Mary full of grace."

I still have my 2006 SLK350 Mercedes after 16 years. It still runs as good as the day I bought it. The technology in that car is somewhat amazing. It is completely ORIGINAL and looks new when cleaned up. People think I just bought a new car.

Mercedes is the first car I drove (at 13 when I started taking college courses)...the legendary W124 300E that I begged my father to send to convert to the mythical AMG Hammer. Of course, he wasn't going to more than double the cost of a vehicle that he already felt he overpaid for. Oh, well. I still loved driving that car.
After my initial stint with the 300E, I learned to drive at 16 (Learner's Permit) in an Audi 90S Quattro (manual) but took my driver's test in the 300E.
Since then, we've owned multiple Mercedes...E320, E430, ML500, S500...and now I own two S-class sedans, an EQS580, and a Mercedes-Maybach...and an Audi A8L (can't leave out Audi).
ALL of these cars have been extremely reliable. Take care of your Mercedes like it is supposed to be taken care of and it will give back in reliability.
