THE CHANNEL DASH - LESSONS LEARNED
"...working so hard to bring history back to everyone's attention and recognising the many great acts of courage performed on our behalf by men and women of all sides during a period of conflict. It is not about 'Winner's or Loser's', Europe is a wonderful place to live because it is made up of many different, but beautiful countries and we should all be proud of this fact. Equally, we should not be ashamed of our past, nor should we glorify it, for it was our past which created what we are today."
PETER NIXON
Chairman of the Channel Dash Association
Official Announcement to the Memorial Unveiling on 22 September 2012 in Dover:
"The CDMT Committee are delighted to announce that the new 'Operation Fuller' monument is fully on schedule and will be unveiled on the above date with the ceremony commencing at 1330hrs and the dedication at 1400hrs. The day promises to be a very significant date in our calendar and is the culmination of much hard work by your committee. To this end, as Chairman, I would like to pay a very special 'well done' to two people in particular who have worked tirelessly with me to ensure the success of this forthcoming event. These are Jim Williams, our Monument Co-ordinator who has dealt with most aspects of the monument itself including, Planning Approval, the local authority, fundraising and liaison with the RAF in particular and also Malcolm Godfrey, Vice Chairman and responsible for Events Management, fundraising and liaison with various major companies. Malcolm is also arranging the reception, Hotel and the dinner to be held on the evening of 22 September. Full details of the activities and Hotel will be sent to all members very soon. We are very pleased to announce that HMS Kent will arrive in Dover for the weekend of the dedication and will provide the Guard of Honour. The Central Band of the RAF will lead the parade which will start off from in front of the Royal Cinque Ports Yacht Club (RCPYC) and march to the site of the new monument at the opposite end of Marine Parade. The parade will consist of available serving military personnel, veterans with Standards and cadets. The parade will be halted in front of the monument to await our VIP's arrival. We are delighted to inform you that the 1st Sea Lord has kindly agreed to perform the unveiling. During the service the Fairey Swordfish of the RNHF and a Spitfire of the BBMF will fly past in salute. Also attending will be a contingent of Naval personnel from the German Navy. As a fitting backdrop to the monument Rex Cadman has once again very kindly made his Spitfire and ME109 available. During the afternoon Princess of Wales Royal Regiment Display Unit, Historic Military Vehicles of the period and uniformed re-enactors will also attend. Following the ceremony, the VIP's, guests and members will retire to the County Hotel, a short stroll away, for a reception. The Band, Guard, Standards and Cadets will retire to the RCPYC for refreshments"
