There are many similarities in the types of physics used in seismology and medical ultrasound. In this recent numerical study presented at the 2021 SPIE Medical Imaging conference, we apply some forward and inverse modelling techniques developed in the field of seismology to better understand how ultrasound waves interact with the human skull. We use the spectral-element method to accurately model the fluid-solid (acoustic-elastic) coupling effects at the tissue-bone interfaces within the forward modelling process. We then apply this forward modelling strategy throughout the full-waveform inversion scheme to iteratively invert for the brain tissue.
