Hunters and Gatherers for me...first time I've played it I thought it was ok, but after few more games it rose to top position and it's been firmly there ever since.

For people getting into hobby I would go with South Seas, though it somewhat lacks the feel of classic Carcassonne due to how quick you're trying to close your islands.

Carcassonne The Castle, might not be the prettiest of the bunch, but is certainly the one that packs the best punch.

Carcassonne: The Castle is the best version I have played. Yes, it's two player only. But it is amazing. I play with my kids all the time.

So far I've disliked all the spin offs. The base game + any one expansion is infinitely better. I flipped my copies of South Seas and Amazonas after one play. Less tension and less depth. More luck. Yuck. Sucked me in with their beauty and deceived me.
