A professor from Korea's Sejong University has revealed a file that could play a pivotal role in ensuring Tokyo can no longer run away from its wartime atrocities.
The scholar says the translated materials are concrete proof of the Japanese military forcing Korean women into sex slavery during the Second World War.
Kan Hyeong-woo reports.
A Korean scholar of Japanese descent is revealing for the first time an official Korean translation and explanation of Japanese documents that can serve as crucial evidence of Japan's wartime sexual slavery.
Yuji Hosaka, a professor of political science at Sejong University is originally from Japan but acquired Korean nationality in 2003 after residing in Korea for more than a decade.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, where he revealed his book of compiled documents to the public, he said that he hopes to shed light and provide logical evidence on the issue of Japan's wartime sexual enslavement of Korean women.
"In the past, we were able to learn about the truth behind the 'comfort women' issue through the words of the surviving victims. But me and my team felt that we needed more to take a step forward in proving the logic behind this, so we published this book."
The book contains Korean translations of some 80 Japanese documents collected since 1997, along with their links to the comfort women issue.
It also includes testimonies from actual victims, then-Japanese soldiers and then-reporters who confirmed that Japanese troops actually forced women to serve as sex slaves during the period.
"With Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family deleting their collection of documents on the comfort women issue from their website... due to various concerns last year, professor Hosaka's latest book now remains as the one and only source of such documents made in Korean."
Kan Hyeong-woo, Arirang News.
