Planting Pansies in Containers for Winter - ❄️🌸❄️

Just in time for the fall and winter season, it's time to put some cold hardy annuals into the containers on our fence gates. I'm putting pansies in, which should be happy all winter and then burst open with lush flowers when spring arrives. At Christmas time, I'm hoping to use these containers to hold greenery boughs and berries for added beauty.

When pansies are leggy, once placed where you want them, cut the blooms back to the stem. By cutting, will flush out blooms and strengthen them. Works for me everytime.

I discovered how hardy Pansies are. We moved here in the summer of 2020. By here, I mean Sanford Maine in zone 5B. I had a plastic deck rail planter we brought with us from a zone 4 garden in northern NH. I neglected to bring it in last winter and it just had dirt in it from previous plantings. I was stunned to see a pretty blue Pansy popping up this summer! It had survived all year and came back. I didnt even know it was in there! I took it out and put it in the ground. To answer your question, I am winterizing at this point. I cut back a few plants today. Bulbs were finished last week so putting away all planters, decor and plant supports in the shed and today I wrapped up the garden hoses and put them away and then put on the little styrofoam frost protectors on the faucets to protect from freezing this winter. Next step is putting away the deck furniture and then we are winter ready.

Last year my pansies in containers came back for me in pnw zone 8, but they didn’t bloom in early spring. This year I thought I’d try clustering the pots under a clear bin in late winter to act as a greenhouse. Of course no nutrients left in the soil might have had something to do with it. 🙄 I’ll be lifting my dahlia tuber, planting bulbs, and storing my geraniums and fuchsias in the garage for the winter.

the smaller the pot the more often u have to water (petunias). I find that some petunias are great performers and some not. Some people have difficulty keeping mini bells alive. They are tough re: too much/too little water. They can easily succumb to molds. I always plant mine in a huge container with other flowers. ALso try to water under the foliage. Bubblegum seems to be easy. I also garden in zone 7. I love your picket fences and garden. Right now I am dividing peonies. They sure are knarly looking. It will be new to me to divide.

Good to see you back in your own garden, Jenny. Question: are you still loving your Hoselink? Any issues? Would you purchase again? My husband is thinking of getting me one for Christmas. Thanks again.

Have you thought about doing a weekly livestream? Maybe, Sunday evenings when the non-gardeners are watching football. We could talk about favorite plants, next year’s plans, and share garden stories.

Just curious- PW supertunia (or any petunia) do you get cutworms (green caterpillars) that destroy the plant? Thanks!
