Peanut the Squirrel's Dad IN TEARS After Pet Euthanized

Peanut the Squirrel's owner, Mark Longo, shares a tearful message on Instagram, after his pet squirrel and raccoon were euthanized by authorities. The internet-famous wildlife animals were confiscated by Department of Environmental Conservation officials, who showed up to Longo's New York home with a search warrant last week. The DEC said Peanut bit one of the investigators, forcing them to euthanize the squirrel and raccoon so they could be tested for rabies.

NYC has a huge rat problem, but no, lets go after a good man and his rescued squirrel and raccoon. Everyone responsible for this should be fired from their jobs.

Why didn't they send somebody to help him get his paperwork straight? It would have been cheaper. Yeah, ask them that, and they would say they don't have the resources. Killing those animals was a malicious act in my opinion.

ONE person could have helped him get through the permit process, but they chose to have a team of agents seize and MURDER those animals for no good reason. Both animals were obviously in good health and spirits and now state resources have been used to upend this guy's life and murder his rescued animals.

One of the worst examples of government overreach in the last 25 years. I had never heard about this squirrel before this but what the NY DEC did is an absolute betrayal of the public's trust. Their whole purpose is to protect the community by looking after the environment; this had no impact on that goal. Accountability is now. Names, resignations, and terminations are in order. The whole department needs to be audited if this is how they think they're supposed to use taxpayers' money and resources.
