In the 17th century, the Indian ocean slave trade was arguably on a bigger scale than the Atlantic slave trade. The hub of this vile industry was in modern-day Tanzania, an area that specialized in three things: ivory, spices, and slaves.

At last. I was an History teacher in the UK, and when I taught this I would get disbelief. Students with African and Caribbean descent would be shocked, having been only taught about the Atlantic trade, but I was actually called a liar by some Muslim students who could not accept the facts.

It should also be noted that as part of the Indian Ocean trade, many male slaves were castrated to prevent them fathering children, especially those destined for the Indian Subcontinent and China. The Atlantic trade had an appalling death rate of 1 in 10, but the Indian Ocean trade is believed to have had a death rate of 9 in 10, largely due to this forced castration.

1962

Slavery in Iran was abolished in 1929. Mauritania became the last state to abolish slavery – in 1905, 1981, and again in August 2007. Oman abolished slavery in 1970, and Saudi Arabia and Yemen abolished slavery in 1962 under pressure from Britain.

For all those interested, search about the Hindukush mountain range and why it is called so.

1:15 Basra is the birthplace of my father and I am an Iraqi, a tribal Arab from Baghdad (the origins of my tribe go back to the Arabian Peninsula) and now I understand why some people still call the blacks in Basra slaves

0:11 That's not entirely true. European slaves where more highly prized in harems from Morocco to Mughal India, and any surviving offspring of theirs could have a fair chance at upward mobility, unlike the descendants of Sub-Saharan African concubines (from the Harateen in North Africa to the Zanji and Siddi in Southwest Asia) who were doomed to a life at the bottom of the color hierarchy.

As I recall, one of the early popes (archbishop?) issued a declaration against slavery, but the laity ignored him (that event is referenced in Dorothy Whitelock's "The Beginnings of English Society."). She also discusses Bishop Wulfstan's efforts to end slavery in Britain, but like with the Pope's edict, people just ignored him. So it can't be said that Christianity shared the same view as Islam, which never at any time tried to stop slavery.
