Aaron Shust’s song My Help (Psalm 121) is one of 10 Psalms on his 10th full-length album entitled Heaven + Earth.

DESCRIPTION:
Michael Card tells the story of sitting in class at Bible School as a young student, and his professor singing an ancient melody to Psalm 121. Some scholars believe it's over 2,000 years old, thus leaving the door open to the possibility that Jesus and His disciples were familiar with it. If so, they may have sung these exact Hebrew words to this very melody. The world may never know, but's it's fun to imagine.

Michael recorded an a cappella version of this melody in 1990, and I knew it would be the perfect moment of contemplative, mysterious beauty for my collection of Psalms. Choosing to include my good friend Yaron Cherniak, a native of Israel and a master of countless Middle Eastern instruments, was a no-brainer and a non-option for this recording. The second he heard the track, he responded, "I have a Cretan Louetta that would be perfect for this." He was so right.

Nathan's brilliance in production kept the song shrouded in mystery and fog, just the way I wanted it. It needed to feel like an ancient King of Judah, standing on his palace rooftop in Jerusalem, was peering into the pre-dawn mist, anxious to see whether or not the enemy was cresting the hills surrounding the city. If the enemy were approaching, where would his help come from?

The Psalmist answers that question: 'My Help comes from the LORD God, Maker of Heaven and Earth."

I lift up my eyes unto the hills
From whence shall come my help?

He will not give to the moving of your foot
Nor shall slumber He who keeps thee

Nor will He sleep
He who keeps Israel

I listen to this probably 1 time every week, if not more. The Psalms were meant to be sung. This is so much more than music, it's the active and alive word of Almighty God of Jacob.

So needed to hear this today. Have health decisions to make and was asking myself this morning "will I make that leap of faith? Do I really believe He will be there to help me?" Yes, I do. Shabbat shalom.
